Pixieware and the filePro Environment

Pixieweb® software has now been successfully deployed in the filePro® environment. filePro® is a Database Management Tool, a 4GL and a Menu Driven Application Generator.
PixieWeb is a general connectivity device between Windows and filePro systems. Clients can be browsers, VB, or desk-top apps. We use it as an alternative to ODBC Its main use however is to connect a browser to an application in the same way as a terminal emulator is connected, but PixieWeb delivers HTML the language of the WWW. The visual presentation of character-based screens is replaced by the sophistication and graphics capabilities that modern browsers can produce. The web server can be IIS or Apache working with any filePro system that has TCP/IP. The browser may be any one which supports forms (e.g. Netscape 2.0 and above, IE).
The PixieWeb Approach on filePro
PixieWeb is used to connect webserver sessions to the filePro application in a way similar to terminal emulators. Web development for simple queries requires no change to existing applications. However, our recommended approach is to modify filePro screens in a Pixieweb friendly manner. This makes server-side ASP scripts (or PHP in the case of Apache) easier to adapt.
PixieWeb friendly screens need not include field labels. Data only is suggested. The role of the ASP or PHP is to parse the output string from the filePro presentation screens, and place the extracted data is into HTML pages. An ASP (PHP) is required for each screen, as the position co-ordinates are interpreted prior to extracting the data. An example filePro screen and corresponding ASP code can be found at Coming Soon . Example ASP scripts are provided with PixieWeb. Initial PHP scripts will be written by PixieWare Software for each installation contract.
PixieWeb connects to the filePro application by TCP/IP.
Even more sophisticated field-by-field web applications may be built using PixieWeb, but some of these techniques have not yet been used in a live web development with filePro. A live application can be viewed at Perfection Hydraulics. Follow instructions for a "guest", and try product 22195. The filePro screen work was performed by an in-house but hands-on Manager, but not a programmer. PixieWare Software developed the ASP scripts. Perfection runs IIS on NT against a SCO Unix filePro server. References can be supplied.
