Brief Description of Legacy Application Migration

PixieEngine supports the re-deployment of legacy MV applications to many SQL platforms. When we convert the PICK app. we are converting to server-side VB which has no forms or visual elements. This version of VB does not have a user interface (UI). We provide the UI either through HTML (GUI in a Browser) or PixieLink, our own terminal emulator built for this purpose. To add the GUI we need to modify the server-side VB app. to generate HTML. Otherwise we supply PixieLink to generate the same text style screens as seen on the PICK environment.

A mixture of text and HTML GUI screens can co-exist. A Browser may be used if HTML is generated and remote internet users are given access. However PixieLink can also render HTML GUI pages for internal use. Look at http://www.pixieware.com/htmllink.htm for information on how we add a GUI to the app. (PICK based or server-side VB based). We do not convert the PICK app to client-side VB which contains forms and visual elements which create the GUI look that is associated with VB. The VB language is exactly the same in both cases but the visual elements are not permitted on the server-side.

PICK itself does not have a UI, it communicates by sending strings of data into and out of the database. Programs have to be written to create the UI and read and write the strings of data. PICK programs also have no visual elements, so the server-side VB model mirrors PICK pretty well. There can be no automatic conversion to the client-side VB model. However, client-side apps. can easily be developed to integrate with the server-side model.

Conversion utilities for PICK data and PICKBasic programs are provided. PixieEngine also includes a set of PICK like VB functions that train the new datastore (Oracle, MySQL, ACCESS, SQL_SERVER) to behave like the PICK datastore. These functions include special PICK READ and WRITE methods so that the PICK data structures, and the PICK program structures do not need to be altered during the conversion.
